Poetry Analysis

Reading poems or understanding them is difficult. In order to critique a poem you should be able to know the basic literary terms used in analyzing a poem. For example, you can use SYMBOLISM. Symbolism uses words that may mean another thing. A crow in the dark. The word crow doesnt necessarily mean that it is the black bird. We know that a crow symbolizes death, so the phrase may mean that death is approaching.
Other literary terms may also be used like metaphor, simile, litotes, synecdoche and among others.

Sometimes it's good to know a little about the poet in order to understand his/her mood/s when the poem was written.
